SHELTER FOR VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

How to help women who were locked with their abusers during the pandemic?

In 2020, when the pandemic started, we, a group of feminists, started to receive absolutely terrifying reports on the increased cases of domestic violence. One woman partially lost her sight - she was repeatedly hit in her head; another one was thrown by her husband from the third floor, as a result, her spine was broken and she couldn't walk anymore. A number of women suffering from severe cases of COVID were kept from visiting a doctor by their abusive husbands and/or fathers.

We created a shelter for victims of domestic violence in one of the most dangerous regions of Russia, where women have practically no rights. For security reasons, we can not disclose the location of the shelter.

The end goal is to move women to other safer places, to other regions of Russia first, and then - outside of Russia. It's crucial to move them outside of the country because the patriarchal ethics of this particular region of Russia where we operate requires these women to be punished by their families for running away, they're treated like their families' property.

We provide women who went through abuse with housing, food, medical care; psychologists work with them to help overcome traumas. When needed, we pay for surgeries, so those who were severely abused physically could walk and see again. 24 women live in the shelter today. Right now there's one COVID-positive woman in the shelter, and besides medical concerns, it creates additional logistical and financial issues - we need to rent another place to isolate her from others.

We need your help because maintaining a shelter requires funds. $ goes to rent, flights, food, medical and psychological help.

We set ourselves the following goals:

$3.000 - we will be able to pay for the portion of the flights and issue visas to those who are already heading outside of Russia.

$5.000 - we will have the opportunity to rent a separate apartment for the COVID-positive women.

$7.000 - in addition to everything described above, we will be able to pay for the rehabilitation of a woman recovering from back surgery - so she can walk again; we need to take her to a special physical rehabilitation center.

$10.000 - in addition to everything described above, we will be able to extend the rent of the shelter for another half a year and continue to help people who suffer from domestic violence.

$15.000 - we will be able to evacuate everyone from Russia to countries that are ready to accept them. Thus, we will have the opportunity to help more victims of domestic violence since new places will open up in the shelter.
