Where to begin with this story? My best friend Kim and her husband Tom have been through more than anyone should have to endure. They have been married for 18 years and have 5 beautiful children. Tom has been living with juvenile diabetes for the majority of his life. Over the past 10 years the disease has taken a huge toll on his body. He's had a pancreas and kidney transplant, lost an eye, had 2 toes amputated, a stimulator device implanted in his stomach to aid digestion, triple bypass and valve replacement and much more. This past year has been the worst! During the bypass surgery, he had several strokes on the table and ended up in a coma for 5 days. Although he's lucky to be alive, his quality of life has suffered immensely and most days he is unable to even get out of bed. His heart is only functioning at 20% so the next step is having a defibrillator implanted so it will restart his heart should it stop beating. This surgery is scheduled for next week. Kim is a teacher and due to all the days she had to take off last year, she was, unfortunately, not reappointed at the school she worked for. Luckily, after putting in over 50 applications, she was offered a position at the beginning of this school year. Kim has been the rock for this family! She wants her husband to have the best care he can get and that means traveling to a hospital that's over 3 hours away for all his procedures, appointments etc. The financial toll this has taken on this family is unbearable.
