Kids helping kids- DRES Well Project in Uganda

Deep River Elementary School's 6th Grade, in collaboration with their PTO and local nonprofit Call to Care Uganda, are on a mission to put a well in Uganda!

Once these 6th graders learned about the water crisis in Uganda in their Social Studies Unit, they decided to do something about it.

Why? For Brayden, it is because clean water is a basic human right. Yet, more than half of Ugandans lack access to clean water. For Emily, it is to prevent sicknesses that come from water sources that are not clean. Some of these sicknesses include: diarrhea, cholera, dysentery, typhoid and polio. The World Health Organization estimates that drinking contaminated water causes 502,000 deaths worldwide each year.

And the biggest problem we have come across? Kids are missing school because they are spending so much time fetching water- water that is not even clean! On average, women and children walk 3.7 miles a day to fetch water. This task often falls upon the children in the family and is prioritized over them going to school.

We believe that all children have the right to BOTH an education and clean water, which is why we've partnered with Call to Care Uganda to help our dream come true!

Call to Care Uganda is a nonprofit organization that provides access to clean, safe, water to vulnerable communities in Uganda by drilling bore wells and creating self- sustaining maintenance programs. Since 2007, they have already drilled 81 wells and helped over 75,000 people. And we want to help them see those numbers grow!
