David, a 33-year old local landscaping business owner, dove in to the cool waters of a NC river on a beautiful summer’s day on August 5th, 2017 and when he didn’t come back up to the surface, the nightmare began.
After numerous surgeries and rehab, David was left quadriplegic with paralysis in both arms and legs. Not many people, and certainly not many 33-year old men with a young wife and small child, would bounce back from the devastating news that you’ll never walk again or lead a normal life. But then you probably don’t know David. As Christopher Reeve wisely said – “Hope is the first step. Without hope we have nothing.”
An injury of this magnitude is extremely expensive. From vehicle to home modifications, everything needs to be customized and becomes a logistical and financial challenge. Our goal is to help David’s in his continuing quest for independence!
There is a beautiful handicapped accessible van out there that just needs to be modified specifically to fit David. This will enable him to drive again, work again, pick his son up from school…..you know, the normal stuff every dad does. Unlike decades past, there are now forward-thinking ways to help patients and their families return to some form of familiar normality, including quadriplegic driving, and provide as much freedom as is possible. With one of these vans and other home modifications the quality of David and his family’s life will dramatically improve.
