Our little Sophie is fighting a battle that no child deserves to fight. She’s fighting CANCER.
Sophie is a 7-year-old Cuban-Panamanian, second-grader and the youngest of 5 siblings. She is a very affectionate, happy and cheerful child.
By Mid-January 2020 she developed a fever without any other symptoms, it seemed like a common cold until her blood tests indicated that something was wrong. The paleness of her cheerful face and the loss of weight was already beginning to be noticed.
By the end of January, we already had a conclusive diagnosis based on the examinations that were carried out. Her doctor explained that Sophie had Mixed Phenotype Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, with a translocation on the Philadelphia Chromosome. This is a very rare type of Leukemia, accounting for 5% of Acute Leukemia cases, most common in adults, very rare in children, and is considered high risk. Fortunately, the long-term prognosis of Leukemia is hopeful for children, since they tend to respond better to treatments than adults; about 80% go into remission and many can be completely cured, but without treatment, they could die within months.
Amidst all this information, which was very difficult to process, we prepared ourselves to face this fight against Cancer in every possible way.
We began with chemotherapy treatment on February 1st and after one month, the response was very satisfactory, her bone marrow was responding well. We are currently finishing the second stage of chemo.
The complete treatment includes 7 stages of chemotherapy during the first 9 nine months, which is considered the most aggressive period and during which most complications could occur. The complete treatment lasts approximately two and a half years. It is ambulatory, although hospitalization may be required for the same treatment or when symptoms such as fever occur.
Sophie, who is the strongest and bravest girl I know, is not afraid of needles, her strength is worth sharing, and despite her medicine-induced mood swings, she reaches everyone around her, enjoying her love for toys, for those she loves and even her new experiences. Her strength teaches us how to live in the present and is helping us to overcome the recurring episodes of fear and helplessness in which we are trapped.
From a medical point of view, we are in the best hands possible and for the time being, we can carry out her treatment in Panama. Her Doctor has extensive experience in this field and we receive constant support for he is always looking out for our little fighter.
However, the financial aspect is more difficult to manage, and in the midst of the Coronavirus Pandemic, it is very disconcerting and stressful because the treatment cannot be stopped. We have exhausted all of our resources paying for medical expenses and although the insurance covers a percentage of the treatments, it is very difficult for us to cover future payments, let alone the basic everyday expenses of the entire family.
For this reason, we have decided to start a Go Fund Me account, in order to ease the burden of medical bills, which are very expensive. In the next days, weeks, and months ahead, we must attend countless chemotherapies, hospitalizations, transfusions, and even medications that must be taken during a minimum of two years.
We appreciate any contribution you can make, regardless the amount, and we encourage you to share Sophie's story with your friends, family, and acquaintances, in order to reach out to more people who can support and help us during these difficult times and for the sake of the health of our little princess.

2. Version en Español: Sophie, una guerrera contra el Cáncer.
Nuestra pequeña Sophie está luchando una batalla que ningún niño merece luchar. Ella lucha contra el CANCER.
Sophie es cubana-panameña, tiene 7 años y medio, está en 2do grado y es la menor de 5 hermanos, es muy cariñosa y alegre.
A mediados de Enero, comenzó a tener fiebre sin ningún otro síntoma, parecía un resfriado común, hasta que sus exámenes de sangre indicaron que algo no estaba bien. Ya se empezaba a notar la palidez en su alegre rostro y la pérdida de peso.
A finales de Enero, ya tenía un diagnostico concluyente, basado en los exámenes realizados. Su doctor nos explicó que Sophie tenía Leucemia Linfoblástica Aguda de Fenotipo Mixto, con una translocación en el Cromosoma de Filadelfia. Esta es un tipo de Leucemia rara, representando el 5% de los casos de Leucemia Aguda, más común en adultos, casi nunca en niños, y se trata como una de Alto Riesgo. Afortunadamente el pronóstico de la Leucemia a largo plazo es muy bueno para los niños, quienes responden mejor a los tratamientos que los adultos, alrededor del 80% entran en remisión y muchos se pueden curar completamente, pero sin tratamiento podría morir en meses.
En medio de toda esta información que era muy difícil de procesar, nos preparamos para enfrentar esta lucha contra el Cáncer de todas las formas posibles.
Se comenzó el tratamiento de quimioterapias el 1ero de febrero, y al cabo del mes, la respuesta fue muy satisfactoria, su médula estaba respondiendo bien. Actualmente, estamos terminando la segunda etapa de la quimio.
El tratamiento completo está compuesto de 7 etapas de quimioterapia, siendo los primeros 9 nueve meses, el período más agresivo y donde mayores complicaciones se pueden presentar. Tiene una duración aproximada de 2 años y medio. Es ambulatorio, aunque en ocasiones se requiere la hospitalización por el mismo tratamiento o cuando se presentan síntomas de fiebre.
Sophie, quien es la niña más fuerte y valiente que conozco, no le teme a las agujas, su fortaleza es digna de compartir y hasta sus cambios de humor inducidos por las medicinas llegan a todos los que la rodean, disfruta de su amor por sus juguetes, de quienes la amamos, y hasta de las experiencias nuevas. Con su fortaleza nos enseña cómo vivir en el presente, ayudándonos a superar los episodios recurrentes de miedo e impotencia que nos atrapan.
Desde el punto vista médico, estamos en las mejores manos y hasta el momento podemos realizar el tratamiento en Panamá. Su Doctor cuenta con una gran experiencia y recibimos su apoyo constante, siempre pendiente de la pequeña guerrera.
Sin embargo, el aspecto financiero es más difícil de manejar, y en medio de la Pandemia del Coronavirus resulta inquietante y estresante, porque el tratamiento no se puede detener. Hemos agotado nuestros recursos pagando los costos médicos y aunque el seguro cubre un porciento de los tratamientos a seguir, nos resulta muy difícil cubrir los gastos futuros del tratamiento, incluso los básicos de la familia.
Por esta razón hemos comenzado esta cuenta Go Fund Me para aliviar la carga de las facturas médicas, que son bien costosas. En los próximos días, semanas y meses por delante, debemos asistir a innumerables quimioterapias, hospitalizaciones, transfusiones e incluso medicamentos que deberá tomar por 2 años mínimo.
