Problem Statement: Too many communities suffer from a lack of nutritional food access, called a "Food Desert" . Food Deserts exist in traditionally underserved communities (ie communities of color).
Solution: Sustainable urban farming, vertically integrated and majority owned by person(s) from underserved communities.
Goals:
1. Install High Tunnel
2. Implement a STEAM curriculum that can be replicated
3. Facilitate Workshops: covid safe/virtual (permaculture, horticulture, cooking, harvesting, planting)
4. Demonstrate vertical integration, value added products, and more
What's vertical integration? Owning two or more stages in the production process. To grow, harvest, pack, and sale a commodity is one example.
What is the money for? Infrastructure upgrades, equipment, vehicle.
We've been working the past 6 years with Axiom Farms Co-op facilitating seminars and workshops explaining the importance of agriculture and the various resources available. We acquired some property in Anderson, SC with the aim of creating a micro campus.
With our relationships and time put into the space we were able to receive a grant and raise funds to have a high-tunnel installed. We have not planted a bunch of tomatoes and expect harvest at the end of May.
WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!
With the coming of harvest, comes new and exciting challenges. We will need to build a packing/wash station, storage buildings, install fencing, get a vehicle to transport produce, remove trees and debris, and more. We also understand there will be unforeseen challenges and financial resources are paramount to navigating those challenges.
The funds requested will not cover all the upgrades and required items but it would be a great help.
This project will impact individuals, schools, and the community as a whole, by providing workshops, volunteer opportunities, jobs, and access to nutritional foods.
