Send Bob the Writer to Get His MLA
Hello there! My name is Bob McGough and my passion in life is writing! My goal is to raise enough money to be able to attend Auburn University of Montgomery to receive my MLA. I realize 15,000 dollars is a lot, but to be clear that is to pay for everything. To get started I need much less than that, about 1200. Once I have that much I will enroll, and then pay for the rest as I go.
A bit about me.
I have lived in south central Alabama my entire life, and I love it here. Growing up I was heavily involved in the Boy Scouts of America, eventually becoming an Eagle Scout. I attended Troy University on scholarship to get my Bachelors of Science in Sociology with a concentration in Anthropology. Roughly five years later I went back and received a Masters in Post Secondary Education from Troy U.
As long as I can remember I have loved to create. I can recall making little picture books when I was small, and as I grew older I continued my creativity in a number of ways. Be it designing board games for my friends or running DnD campaigns, I have always been on the go trying to find my perfect medium to get the worlds in my mind out there for people to enjoy.
Off and on throughout the years I would tinker with writing. In high school I tried writing a novel based around Warhammer (a tabletop game). While getting my bachelors I toyed with writing lovecraftian-influenced fiction. Once I graduated I made my second great attempt at writing a novel set in a world I had created for DnD. When that fell through I set serious writing to the side for some time, only writing on online forums, or the occasional music publication.
It was while I was getting my masters that it all came into focus, and it ‘clicked’ for me. Since that time I have written dozens of stories, completed two NaNoWriMos, and have written two collections of short stories. I have been published, and have a couple of stories coming out in horror anthologies within the next few months.
For almost three years now writing has been my focus. I am fortunate to have a job that allows me the time to write, and a schedule that is conducive for returning to school. Because I feel that is the next step I need to take to further my craft. The skills I learn in AUM’s amazing English department will allow me to hone my writing even further, while giving me the skill set to attempt to get into a doctoral program, so that I can one day return the blessing of education to others.
Why should you donate to me?
Your money will not go to waste. As much as any education based GoFundMe can be, I feel I am a pretty sure thing. I have already completed one Masters, so you know I am capable of completing the task. I am already getting some small publishing credits, so you know my writing ability can’t be too terrible. I am motivated and passionate, and excited to further my education while honing my craft.
What is the money going towards?
The bulk of the money is going towards tuition. The program is 30 hours, and including hourly fees that will cost 10,920 dollars. There are several other fees, such as mandatory student activity and administrative fees that would total up to 820 dollars for the four semesters I would be there. With enrollment and graduation fees the grand total is 11,938 dollars. The remaining money (up to fifteen thousand) would go towards schoolbooks and other school based expenses.
Any money raised beyond my goal will go towards paying off my student loans that I accrued getting my Masters of P.S.E. (which come to roughly thirty thousand dollars).
