Help para skier make World Champs

Donativo protegido
Mark Soyer is an elite downhill mono skier.

Ranked Australia's No 1 sit skier. We are hoping people reading this story will donate to help Mark to fulfill his dreams.

This is a very small part of Mark’s story:

All the competitions and trips have been majority self funded by his own savings and some small amonts of greatful community funding and donations.

Mark is hoping to attend the 2015 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships in Panorama, Canada.  This has become more difficult and at this stage he may not be able to attend due to lack of funding.  Without the generous support of others, Mark will not be able to realise his potential, as he cannot affford full cost of the travel/training expenses associated. The total cost will exceed $20,000, of which Mark has saved 50% from his full time profession as a jeweller.

Mark has trained very hard to get to this level in his chosen sport and is passionate about reaching the pinnacle in order to inspire other up and coming athletes through his volunteer work with Disabled Wintersports Australia (DWA).  By attending the World Championships he hopes to show others what can be achieved.

Mark’s life story is a rather incredible story of survival, courage, determination and a will to succeed.  In the face of adversity he always maintains a positive attitude.  Mark, like so many people, does not like to push his strong points and will only reveal very basic information about him.  As such I have prepared some of the adversities in life that he has faced, and with a great strength of character and courage he has triumphed over them.

1981 - Diagnosed with ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia) was given less than 40% chance of beating it, with 3 years of treatment.

1986 - Relapsed – treatment started again.  He is considered to be cured of his ALL and he has developed a strong desire to enjoy life to the full.

2004 - October - Whilst riding his motor bike on the family farm, he ran over a very small branch which was concealed in the grass.  This caused him to fall from his bike and suffer a spinal injury; he is now a complete paraplegic.

2006 -February- He travelled to Colorado (USA) where he attended two ski development camps for people with disabilities.   No such camps are held in Australia.  Ski season commenced in Australia and he soon became noticed by a talent scout and he was invited to train with the Australian Ski Team at Thredbo.  He was invited to join the Australian Paralympics Ski Team in Vail, Colorado and then Canada, December 2006 - January 2007.

2007 - Successful winner of The Louise Sauvage  “Aspire to be a Champion Award” February. Mark was crossing a pedestrian crossing and a car hit him and threw him out of his wheelchair.  Mark was nominated for the Herald Sun, Pride of Australia, 2007 and was one of the last three finalists in his section.

2008 -  He was nominated in ‘The Leader Sports Star Award 2008’, in his local paper.

2009 - August, he competed in the Winter Games NZ

2010 -  Approached by Disabled WinterSport Australia in relation to running ski development camps, similar to those in the US.   As a result of this approach, he assisted with three separate weekend camps - beginner – development camps.   He was requested to assist the Able Management Group (AMG) with a Junior Wheelchair Ski Camp.

2011 -January IPC Alpine Skiing Noram in Winter Park, USA he came home with a Bronze medal for men’s sitting giant slalom.  At the New Zealand Winter Games, he finished with a two Bronze medals in the men's sitting giant slalom, and Super G. In December he competed in the IPC Alpine Skiing Noram Cup at Copper Mountain, Colorado, where he earned three fourth place finishes and one seventh place.

2012 - Liberty Skis Corporation signed him to its professional team. http://vimeo.com/47053208  In May he was nominated for National Volunteer Week in the Sunday Age.

2013 - Competed in the IPC Alpine Skiing in Colorado and came home with a Bronze medal in the last race.

Mark was the AMG Events Coordinator and the founding member of the AMG Free Ride Team and was involved with the AMG, which is an organisation that facilitates adaptive sports in the Alpine area for people with disabilities.  He has held three fundraisers in Melbourne, for the AMG, and has raised in excess of $14,500.

Mark is a very active member of DWA, and in his own time volunteers to be a trainer/instructor at a number of camps held at Falls Creek and Perisher.  He attends Falls Creek to teach people with a disability the thrill of skiing.  These camps are organised for many different organisations, including Vision Australia and the Spina Bifida Foundation.  These camps are quite a cost for him, but his passion to help people with a disability to be able to enjoy outdoor activities is very important to him.

All support, big or small is greatly appreciated.
Thankyou.
