UPDATE: Due to changes in campaign dates, I will no longer be able to go to Costa Rica this year to defend turtles from poaching. Instead I am taking the same time to help out on the ground with the next Yellowstone Wolf Patrol. In November I will be heading off to Costa Rica to help defend endangered sea turtles from poaching during their peak nesting season.
There are three main turtles being threatened - green, hawksbill and leatherback turtles. Their shells and skins are used to make tourist trinkets, and their eggs and meat are sold to make food (turtle soup being considered a speciality by some, particularly tourists).
Unfortunately many poorer communities resort to poaching as there are few other profitable ventures for them to be involved in. Part of the campaign I will be volunteering for includes working with the local community to show how these turtles can be more profitable to their communities alive than dead.
I am asking for your help to get me to Costa Rica. Any contribution, large or small, is deeply appreciated. Any funds raised over the cost of my airfare will be donated directly to the campaign. Check out the perks - postcards, letters & drawing, and small gifts from Costa Rica!
For those that don't know me well, I have been involved in environmental, animal and social justice campaigns for 15 years and have a deep sense of duty and responsibility to work hard for a better world for all of us (including the turtles!). In advance, thank you so much for your support.
