Veteran headstone restoration
Donation protected
Most everyone has met a WWII veteran, not many today has known a WWI vet, nobody today has known a Civil War Veteran. It's because of this intangibility that Civil War Veterans cemetery memorials have fallen victim to time, pollution and biological growth. Soldiers and sailors of a war long past. The urgency to race to protect, preserve, straighten or replace these stones is immediate. I have for the past few years spearheaded a group of volunteers to do why the municipalities do not have the budget for. Our efforts have been hampered by having quite literally a zero budget. Hoses have been acquired through friends or family. Most of the tools we have are trash day finds and the most important piece of the puzzle, the biological cleaning solution, costs $50 a gallon. Some ask me why I don't use diluted acids or find a cheaper alternative. My answer every time is that acids can damage stones and do not inhibit the biological growths that plague limestone or marble. I can only ethically use a cleaning solution that is safe for the stones and the surrounding vegetation. With our supply dwindling, tools breaking, and hoses bursting, I fear we may not be able to continue to give back to our lost veterans as they deserve. The North Shore Cemetery Preservation Project (found on Facebook) is still in its infancy and only last year was registered as a 501c non profit organization. Please help us to continue our work to honor our soldiers who for some made the ultimate sacrifice to create and preserve this country.
