Emerald Boost! support family biz

Donation protected
It’s time for a boost!  Best known for our delicious authentic Thai food and as a venue for live independent music, the Emerald of Siam spreads love through the community of Tri-Cities, Washington.

Let’s raise some money for a deserving family business who does not discriminate, who nurtures culture in Eastern Washington and who serves really fantastic freshly prepared food!

From Dara and Bill:

Thanks for checking out our gofundme page!

We hope to raise money for needed upgrades at our establishment including a new outdoor awning and/or new front windows for improved climate control, kitchen upgrades and POS additions for improved service, acoustical and electrical improvements,  and more.  Mom gifted us a restaurant that had been straddling the line of red and black for years. Increased business has caused a demand for some upgrades that we are asking for some help to afford.  Inflating costs of goods, taxes, and thousands of dollars in music royalty fees to music copyright companies such as ASCAP, BMI and SESAC make sustaining this restaurant/music venue on our shoe-string budget extremely challenging.

A little background:

The Emerald of Siam Thai Restaurant and Lounge in Richland's Uptown Center was opened by our family in 1983. The restaurant was founded by a grant from our grandparents to two of their daughters Sunanta (our aunt) and Ravadi (our mom).  Sunanta retired in the 90s and Mom ran it tirelessly until 2011.  At that time the Emerald was passed down to me (Dara Quinn) and my brother Billy Quinn.

Ravadi (Mom) is an amazing woman known by many for her compassionate ear and million dollar smile. Although she worked up to 16 hours a day, Mom was also very active in community service often volunteering her services for children and the elderly by offering free cultural classes and speaking at various community events.  She also managed to publish 2 cookbooks and 1 book of poetry before her retirement and her move back home to Bangkok in 2011 with our dad Garry Quinn.

By 2011 (after 28 years in business) our cute little hole in the wall Thai restaurant had become quite run down physically and our regular customer base had been dwindling as people moved away, passed away or lost interest (although the food was still great). At this point either it was time to close the restaurant or to make some major upgrades. We decided it was too sad to let the restaurant go. The Emerald is like family to not just us, but to the community as well.  We see generations of the same families over the years.  Some of those who dined in-utero even bring their own kids here now!  To see The Emerald close would have been like losing a family member.

So, we rolled up our sleeves and with help from good friends we began to upgrade, tearing the place apart to put in a full bar and entertainment stage. Making these changes was like our own little “Restaurant Impossible”. Mind you we have maintained our same quality food (our chef Ma Vannapho has been with us for over 20 years!).

The two of us siblings along with a small but growing staff (whom we consider family) have run the Emerald for almost 4 years and have seen success. The community has responded very well to our new offers of nightlife and live music while maintaining Mom's passion for promoting cultural awareness and spreading love throughout the community. This is our second year in a row being recognized for "Best Nightlife Venue" in the Tri-City Herald People's Choice Awards.  We are known for a welcoming vibe and have a "come as you are" policy.

The Emerald of Siam has become a musical oasis in this desert and many people equate the atmosphere at our place to venues they find in big cities.  Our appreciative built-in crowd has been growing and the Thai cuisine continues to be amazing. We have become a favorite with touring bands, our audience is very receptive and are fun to play to.   Being a former touring musician, I learned how musicians like to be treated.   Sometimes a hot Thai meal on the road is like a million bucks to a touring band!  The Emerald's atmophere and hospitality brings top acts from the region and the nation to keep coming back.  It's also popular amongst local musicians, offering open mics and jam sessions as well as showcasing local music acts.

A lot of people love the Emerald, and we love everyone for all of their support. We hope you will help us with a little “boost” to keep this place going and improving.  Any little amount will help and you will be supporting family business, good food and good music.

The kickoff for this fundraising campaign will be held on Wednesday April 22nd from 5pm - 10pm. Tickets will be available at the door or online at http://emeraldboost.brownpapertickets.com. Tickets start at $25 and include perks such as music performance by Earshot Jazz nominees McTuff, delectable Thai food, T-shirts,  music CDs, Mom's cookbooks and more.
