Conference Registration & Expenses

Donation protected
A paper of mine was recently accepted to the Disability Studies Conference that will be held in Minneapolis from June 11th-14th. This is super exciting news, and I'm so happy to be included as a Master's student alongside brilliant & groundbreaking scholars and activists who I've read and admired for years.

I'll be part of a panel of graduate students from UW-Madison who are exploring how disability is represented and navigated in a handful of humanities-based projects, and I'm thrilled about it! This is the biggest disability studies conference in the U.S., and a really fantastic opportunity to talk with other people in a field that's generally pretty scattered and neglected within academia at large.

The paper I'll (hopefully!) be presenting is about representations in popular films from the late 90s/early 2000s of young women with mental illness and how they navigate psychiatric and academic systems.

Because this conference is so dedicated to being accessible for people who need all kinds of accomodations, registration costs are exceptionally high. I'm sure you've all heard the doom and gloom horror stories about the state of academia--especially in crucial but not particularly lucrative fields, like Gender and Women's Studies--and the frustrating truth is that there aren't any funds available through my university or department for graduate students to participate in conferences like this.

The funds I raise through this campaign will go towards conference registration and travel expenses (getting to Minneapolis, having a place to stay once I get there).

Any and all contributions will be so appreciated!
