In late 19th century, entrepreneur Melvin Mills had a fruit and vegetable empire in Harding County, New Mexico’s Mills Canyon. It was ten miles long and crisscrossed by irrigation channels and cisterns that fed hundreds of acres of fruit orchards and vegetable gardens. Mills planted 14,000 apple, peach, pear, cherry, plum, walnut, almond and chestnut trees. He also cultivated melons, tomatoes, grapes and cabbages. Unfortunately, the canyon flooded in 1904 totally wiped out the operation. Thereafter, the Dust Bowl of the 1930s wiped out the small farms in the area.

Today, Harding County residents have no farms and are without farm fresh produce. The residents of Roy and Mosquero have to travel 80 to 100 miles one-way to Las Vegas, New Mexico to purchase farm fresh produce on Wednesdays and or Saturdays.

Recently, my wife and I purchased 150 acres to establish Healing Earth Farm, a homestead and pick-your-own orchard & farmers’ market. Our intention is to produce good quality organic food using sustainable permaculture practices. We intend to plant various fruit and nut trees as Melvin Mills previously did. Also, we’d like to cultivate an array of fruits and vegetables. To extend the growing season, we’d like to build a few greenhouses.

These crops will reduce the carbon footprint, help prevent wind erosion, cloud seed, produce oxygen, and allow us to make produce donations to our local senior center’s nutrition programs in Roy and Mosquero.

We are asking you to help us raise $20,000 (only a fraction of our total cost) to expedite this venture, and have it operational by the summer/fall of 2015. No contribution is too small, and all are greatly appreciated, thank you!
