Hello! My name is Mitchell, and I am the group leader of the “RBus” project. I am a junior in high school taking full time post-secondary classes in an electrical mechanical engineering program. Three of my closest friends, who are also part of the same program, had thought of an idea of converting an old school bus into a fully functioning RV. We have been working on this project since the 1st of October.
Fun Fact:
The term for a school bus that has been converted into a RV is a "skoolie"
The ability to travel and make unique memories with friends is a compelling opportunity; the experience is enhanced when every step of the project is a hands-on, personal chance for everyone involved to collaborate towards that goal. Every step of the proposed attempt at constructing a mobile home will without a doubt be rewarding for each of us involved. Our education and commitment as engineering students will be tested and exemplified by our collective efforts. Aside from the process of creating our masterpiece, the practicality of fabricating our own multipurpose “home on wheels” is stunning. The potential for long-distance transportation, camping, and even long-term, semi-permanent living is immensely appealing. Thus, we propose, if not encouraged, to begin this endeavor towards converting a school bus into a fully functional, and fully original, recreational vehicle.

1. Plan and purchase a school bus
2. Remove and liquidate/salvage any components that are not beneficial to our goal of creating a capable RV
3. Gradually design and purchase/fabricate all of the necessities that are essential for a group to live happily and safely inside for a given length of time
4. Register the vehicle as a legal RV when all requirements are met
5. Continue with both practical and cosmetic additions and modifications as resources and funds become available, while also practically testing the now-functional RV on incrementally longer and more prolific trips
The initial cost will include the cost of the bus (around $2000) and also the cost of fuel to drive it or otherwise transport it to its designated storage location. Cost of storage will be little to none, as the vehicle will be stored at either a team member’s residence or at one of several local low-cost long-term vehicle storage facilities. From then on, all expansions, modifications, and repairs will be conducted and paid for by gradually creating/revieving funds and donations, labor, and time becomes available, without any sole individual responsible for the funding.
Given our desire and motivation as a group to go forth with this project, our opportunity to exercise our talents and knowledge as engineers, and the chance for great long-term reward, both practically and as a challenge for us to test ourselves and bond with each other, we have every reason to believe that this will be a fruitful project worth supporting.
Anyone who contributes to the “RBus” project will be rewarded. When you contribute to this project you will receive the reward for your level and any previous levels.
