Jack's Kidney Surgery

Jack is facing kidney reconstruction surgery. He was born with horseshoe kidneys. This is means his kidneys are fused together. They may also be filled with multiple large cysts. He recently became very ill and went into kidney failure. He was transported to a hospital in Columbia, Missouri, which is three hours from home. He spent a week in intensive care while they put him on dialysis and placed stents into his kidneys.

The doctors are still working on what exactly is wrong with Jack. At this point they think he may only have one functioning kidney. They also think his ureters are coming out from the bottom of his kidneys which makes them more likely to get blocked (This is what made him critically ill). On September 15th he will have the stents removed and have a retrograde cystography, where dye is put through the kidneys and they can see the anatomy of them better and determine what needs to be done. Two weeks after this procedure he will have another renal scan and then surgery will be scheduled.

During the surgery they will relocate the ureters and fix any other problems. He will also have his gallbladder removed because they have found gallstones.

All of these procedures and surgery require multiple trips to Columbia. We are obviously going to do whatever it takes to get Jack healthy, but these trips are creating a major financial strain on our family.

I am a first year teacher and have almost used all of my leave already within the first month of school. I will apply for FMLA for my days missed, but my pay will be docked when I run out of sick leave. My district does not have a sick leave pool. I have already checked into that.
