Derrick Silvera, 44, is originally from southern New Jersey and has been living in Atlanta since 2002 working as a manager in the service industry in Buckhead. He is not able to work currently due to his condition. He has an 18 year old daughter who is a freshman at Plattsburgh State University of New York(seen in picture above). We have created this site to raise money for a specific treatment in Houston that gives Derrick his best chance at survival.
Derrick was diagnosed with Grade IV Glioblastoma also known as GBM in November of 2013. It is a rare form of cancer with incidences of 2-3 cases out of every 100,000 people in North America and Europe. The median survival with the standard care of Chemotherapy and radiation is 15 months. The median survival rate without the Chemo is 12 months (minus Chemo side-effects.)
He had surgery to remove the tumor and followed this up with the standard treatment of radiation and Chemotherapy for 6 weeks following the surgery. Even with that standard treatment the chances of the tumor not growing back within 5 years are less than 2%. Sure enough, in June of 2014 the tumor did begin growing back in the original site as well as a new site. The image below shows the new tumor circled in green as well as the original tumor growing back in white to the bottom left of the green circle. The picture is at the bottom of this page.
The prognosis with the Chemotherapy and Radiation is that it is not a cure and at best can only slow the cancer down(most of the time it doesn't even do this).With the ineffectiveness and bad side effects of Chemo for Derrick's particular situation he began considering alternative medicine. He came across documentaries on alternative treatment of Grade IV Glioblastoma at a Houston clinic under Dr. Burznski. After doing more research online he found some compelling success stories for the exact type of cancer Derrick has. Where traditional medicine gives Derrick a 1% chance to live past 5 years, Dr. Burzynski gives him almost a 50% survival rate with the medical studies and results to prove it. Incredible right? I will provide some links below regarding documentaries on Dr. Burznski and the fantastic work he does. Insurance does not cover Dr. Burznski's methods yet due to complications with the FDA, but that is a different fight. I encourage you to look at the documentaries about him.
