Help Sweets Beat Heartworms

Please meet Sweets, a young pup we are currently fostering. Sweets found our campsite 2 weeks ago on the Yuba River; she was severely malnourished, suffering from a whole-body skin infection, infested with fleas and in a generally weakened state. Sara and I decided to bring her back to the city as the shelters in that area would likely have euthanized her. Our commitment to this very gentle, loving and sweet girl is to provide a safe place for her to regain health. Sweets has been recovering well from her skin infection, has a healthy appetite and is flea-free today. Unfortunately she has been diagnosed with Heartworms at the vet. Heartworm is a parasite fatal to dogs and is expensive taking a minimum of 3 months to treat. We rescued Sweets to save her life and have been able to bring her out of immediate danger and provide for her medical care up to this point but can’t afford the Heartworm treatment, which will total about 3,000 dollars. Due to the financial challenges, the strict exercise restrictions and the length of treatment it could be difficult to rehome this otherwise good-natured obedient and friendly girl. Sara and I would like to provide a home for her until she’s well with the potential of keeping her if we are a good fit for her needs, however would like her to find the best possible match; please feel free to contact us or pass on her story to anyone who might be interested in a future with this wonderful dog.
