An Overdue LDR Honeymoon
My name is Rachel Schmidt and my husband is Darcy. We are an LDR (Long Distance Relationship) couple who lived 4500 miles/7200 kilometers apart. I live in Tennessee and he lived in The Netherlands. We met online in 2011 and fell in love almost instantly. Unfortunately, our wallets did not thank us. Over the past three years, he has only spent two months at a time here and we were apart for 6-8 months between visits. Skype was our best friend but it could only do so much. We worked paycheck to paycheck, saving every cent, just to be together. After him coming here three times, we decided to get married in the Netherlands on September 30th, 2013. We couldn't afford an expensive or fancy wedding, due to paying for plane tickets. We also couldn't afford to go on a honeymoon but we were just happy to be together.
Since May 2014, Darcy came back to the US so we can start a petition for him to stay here permanently. The cost for this was about $3500, and when you work a minimum wage job, that is not an easy thing to accomplish. We had to buy a plane ticket costing $1300, the petition itself was $1500 and the rest was spent on vaccinations, documents and other expences. Needless to say, we spent all the money we had in the last several months to get this done.
Now, within a month is our one year anniversary. We desperately want to celebrate it but we have little financial means. I work part-time with minimum wage and Darcy is not allowed to work until his work permit is approved. Since we also had no honeymoon, our wish is to spend a few days in a cabin in the mountains to celebrate our marriage and to have some alone time together (we have to live with my parents until Darcy can get a job).
In order for our wish to come true, we need your help. Your donations would allow us to finally have a honeymoon as well as an anniversary trip and any donation would help.
The money would go towards:
- Gas to get there
- 3 Nights at the cabin
- Local attractions
