Home for Evicted Widowed Mom of 5

Donation protected

Rocio Flores, a widowed, mother of five in Dripping Springs, Texas is being evicted from the land where her mobile home to make room for a new subdivision. She must find a new location before the end of 2015.

After losing her husband to a car accident in 2009, Rocio has worked hard to provide for her kids. She’s desperate to stay in the only community her kids have ever known.

With no available rental spots and no affordable housing in the area, your donation will help Dripping Springs Community Mission Partnership (DSCMP) secure land, connect utilities, and move the Flores family.

Please help Rocio and her kids stay in our community and continue thriving.

Here’s her story…

For the last five years, DSCMP has been a part of Rocio’s life. In 2009, she lost her husband, Gustavo to a traffic accident. As a stay-at-home mom with five children – ages 2-11 – she found herself for the first time needing to financially provide for her young family. Without a GED and a misplaced green card, the only job she could secure was at an elementary school cafeteria.

Not long after, Rocio’s pipes froze during a cold snap. The Dripping Springs United Methodist Church received a call, asking for help. Chuck Lemmond , a local builder and community volunteer answered the call.

As it turned out, plumbing was the least of her issues.

“The residence was virtually uninhabitable,” said Chuck Lemmond, owner of Bear Creek Homes. “The house had black mold on the inside walls, the roof leaked, and you could see light through the walls at the seams in the metal. It certainly was not a place to raise five small children.”

Chuck did what he could to repair the plumbing, but before he left, he told Rocio, “I don’t know how I’ll do it, but I’m going to get you a new home.”

After sending an email to several friends, 40 people arrived to help the Flores family. This gave birth to DSCMP, a 501(c)3 non-profit helping under-served local people acquire livable, affordable housing and improve life skills.

For Rocio, DSCMP secured a FEMA trailer for $1,200 from Louisiana and $2,200 to move it. The group demolished the unlivable mobile home, completely furnished the new home, and built an entry porch.

For five years, DSCMP has been walking with the Flores family, helping Rocio obtain her GED, her US Citizenship, and secure a full-time job with benefits for her kids. She is now a fully contributing member to the community.

“I call DSCMP my Angels,” Rocio said. “They saved me. They gave me help when I so badly needed it.”

Rocio does not have family she can rely on. “DSCMP and the Dripping Springs community are all I have,” she adds.

She is a hard worker and dreams of a better future for her kids. “I want them to stay in the Dripping Springs schools. This is the only school they know. They’re doing so well in school and I fear if we have to leave the area, they won’t get the education they need.”

Her oldest, Ismael, 16, dreams of going to auto mechanic school. “My kids would be the first in my extended family to get through high school and then on to a good paying career.”

Please donate and help us keep this treasured family in Dripping.
