Sydney's Ethiopia Trip & Med School

Dear Family & Friends,
Most of you know that I’ve always wanted to be a doctor except a few times I considered being an ice cream lady instead. That was, of course, prior to middle school and actually dissecting creatures. I knew then that surgery and medicine of some kind were in my future. Go figure, considering I’m still skirmish and queasy when I’m on the receiving end of a needle or procedure. This, however, may assist in making me sensitive and excellent doctor.
Well, here I am, a second year medical student at Howard University!
I have a special interest in cardiothoracic surgery with a focus in pediatrics. I received my undergraduate degree from Howard University where I majored in Biology.
Medical school is a journey in itself and now I’m also embarking on an international medical journey with 13 of my class colleagues to Ethiopia. Directly after taking my board exams in June, I will be headed to the University of Gondar in Ethiopia to learn and serve. The mission will be for 22 days, June 11 – July 2. This is a student organized and funded experience. Funds are needed for immunizations, travel and expenses. I also need to supplement finances for my education.
Family, education and community have always been my passions. I look forward to learning and serving abroad on the trip and returning with more passion and commitment to serve those in need here.
My focus and resolve have remained strong and I thank you for all of your encouragement, love and support today and along the way.
