Legos for Learning

Kids love Legos! Did you know that Legos can be an amazing math tool? They are great for creating patterns, making graphs, as manipulatives for addition and multiplication problems, and even as a way of measuring non-standard units for objects. Our first graders would love to be able to use these as a tool in their math learning. Unfortunately we are in a low income school district that does not have the money for many of the basics much less the “extras.” We need to purchase boards for each child to work on as well as enough Legos for each child to be able to use. Our first grade enrollment is usually around 100 children. We’d love to give a little extra fun to our math lessons this year! Guess what? There are some bonuses to this project! First, we will be able to make this one time purchase and use them for many years to come. Second, we can use the legos as a creative writing lesson. Kids can build a scene with their Legos on their boards and then write about it. The possibilities are endless!
