Hello. Our names are Virginia Broadway and Adam Weaver, and we are both teachers at West Ashley High School in Charleston, SC.

As many of you are aware Charleston has suffered a great loss at the hands of racially charged hatred and ignorance. On Wednesday June 17th, a group of men, women, and children met at Mother Emanuel AME Church to worship and conduct a bible study. That night, nine innocent men and women lost their lives at the hands of a gunman motivated by racist hate.

As was the case for many in Charleston and around the world, the news of this violent act of hate sent us spiraling. We felt heartbroken, afraid, angry, and uncertain, among other emotions.

Just two days later, the pain of the event deepened in our hearts, when the names of the victims were released. Reverend Depayne Middleton Doctor was among the list of the nine victims of the shooting. Reverend Doctor was the mother of four daughters, two of whom we have either taught, coached, or both. Hali and Kaylin Doctor are two of the most driven, respectful, kind, and passionate students we have ever had the pleasure of teaching/coaching. As individuals, they show perseverance, dedication, and drive in all of their endeavors. As sisters, they share a loving and compassionate bond indicative of the incredible character and sense of family that their mother instilled in them. Hali, a middle school student, displays heart, compassion, and maturity well beyond her years. Kaylin, a recent graduate of West Ashley High, displays drive, passion, and commitment, all which helped her to gain acceptance into Johnson and Wales in the Fall.

The realization of what this meant for two of our most beloved students has and continues to break our hearts. We sat in our kitchen that day frozen by heartache and feelings of powerlessness for hours. Our heartache eventually turned to rage as we tried to process the injustice and hate, and we settled finally in a place of concern for the students we came to love.

That brings us to this donation page. In the aftermath of this tragedy, our focus has turned to the ways in which we can support the family of Reverend Depayne Middleton Doctor and her incredible daughters. One of those means of support is financial. The idea seemed at first to be superficial in light of the pain this family has experienced, but our hope is to alleviate this very real source of stress and anxiety. If we can spare this family any more pain, then we will do anything possible.

Our goal, in truth, is boundless. We hope to raise as much money as possible in order to support this family. These funds will help with whatever need arises for the family: medical, educational, etc. Our base goal is $10,000 dollars, but we hope to shatter that goal.

So please, donate and help us care for this incredible family.
