Driver in #TexasCityTX Dike wreck in country illegally

TEXAS CITY -- The 24-year-old man accused of causing a wreck that seriously injured a 6-month-old girl and her father, is in the country illegally officials confirmed.
Robel Usiel Mendez-Perez, is charged with aggravated assault with a vehicle and driving while intoxicated in connection to a Saturday night crash on the Texas City Dike.

While his bond is set at $152,500, Mendez-Perez won't be getting out of jail. That because when he was transferred to the Galveston County Jail officials confirmed that he was in the country illegally.

He is now being held in the county jail on an immigration hold and has been denied bond.

A 25-year-old Katy man, his 27-year-old wife and their infant daughter were in the 2000 block of Dike Road when their vehicle was hit at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
The father was trapped in the vehicle and Texas City Fire Department crews had to use Jaws-of-Life to pull the man from his vehicle.

The infant girl was at first unconscious and emergency responders performed CPR.

Texas City Police Department Spokesman Cpl. Paul Edinburgh said there was a child seat in the car but could not confirm the infant was in the safety seat at the time of the accident.

Police said the crash was caused by a suspected drunken driver, who at first tried to leave the scene on foot.

Robel Usiel Mendez-Perez, 24, was arrested and charged in the connection to the case.

Octavio Sanchez of Pasadena had just spent the day at Dike Beach with his wife and children when they noticed a vehicle in front of their's swerving.

"You could immediately tell that the driver was impaired," Sanchez said. "Then out of no where he just steps on the gas going about 50 mph, then he starts cutting off cars, going around cars."

That's what led up the the crash.

"We could see the dirt in the air once we got to the actual accident I got out of my vehicle and ran to the car that was hit," he said.

A Good Samaritan, that bystanders said is a nurse, already had the infant girl on the ground and was performing CPR, Sanchez said.

Arthur Guzman, who was also a witness to the crash, said he asked the woman who cared for the girl if she was a nurse and she responded "yes."

At first it was thought by those on the scene of the crash that the girl did not survive, but a family member confirmed to i45NOW that the baby has a head wound but expected to recover.

Her dad had serious leg injuries and also broke an arm and was expected to be in the hospital for a couple of weeks.

The mother was to be released from the hospital on Sunday.
