DIRO® by SWATAB is a climate friendly laundry technology without detergent chemicals, praised both by the World Wildlife Fund and the UN Network for Clean Seas. DIRO® is a filter system that is placed between the incoming cold water and washing machines, making detergents totally redundant. Tested by SWEREA IVF and has a proven cleaning effect according to the EU Ecolabel test for detergents. Allowing for reductions in energy consumption by 80 percent on commercial washing cycles and by 40 percent for the drying processes.

“Solution expected to contribute to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being. Chemical residues remain on textiles after conventional washing., resulting in allergies, contact dermatitis, and aggravated eczema. Powder detergents contain zeolites, which appear as a fine dust with particles so small they can enter a person’s lungs. Other chemicals in detergents include sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), linear alkyl benzene sulfonates (LAS), petroleum distillates (also known as naphtha), and sodium hypochlorite (household bleach). Many of the chemicals have negative effects on humans, animals, and/or the environment, such as skin irritation, organ toxicity, liver and kidney damage, toxicity to fish, reproductive and developmental problems in animals, and excessive growth of marine plants, triggering unbalanced ecosystems. Fabric softeners also contain many hazardous chemicals, including chloroform, benzyl alcohol, ethanol, and linalool. Human skin is frequently exposed to some of these chemicals as they remain in fabric after washing.
Our solution is also expected to contribute to SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, by reducing the use of chemicals in society, decreasing the need for transportation, and cutting energy consumption by shortening drying times, lowering washing temperatures, and sending less polluted wastewater to sewage treatment plants. As for economic effects, it reduces service and maintenance costs, extends the service life of the machines, and lowers the cost per wash compared with conventional washing.
By reducing resource use, the solution will affect SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. The holding tanks are rotation molded with reused plastic. Filters have been analysed by SYSAV in Malmö and are classified as combustible waste. The production will be outsourced to countries strategically selected to minimize the environmental impact. Local household appliance service companies will install and service the systems.
The solution will also contribute to SDG 14: Life Below Water. Sewer plants and septic systems process large quantities of wastewater but do not always operate properly or remove enough nitrogen and phosphorus before discharging into waterways. Some detergents contain zeolites instead of phosphorus, and wastewater plants have problems removing these small particles from the water. Another issue is that detergents and softeners contain microplastics. Sweden also has over 700,000 private non-approved sewage systems where in many cases the greywater pollutants end up in the streams, lakes, and groundwater.”

Boost our Manufacturing team
Manufacturing in the UK will mean we can more easily prototype changes to the cabinets in which the patented DIRO® systems are installed and the positioning and size of the water tanks. This will allow bespoke systems to be developed to meet varying customer demands for space and capacity. Lead times and the carbon footprint of logistics can be greatly reduced.
DIRO® is tested according to the requirements of the EU-Eco Label tests for laundry detergents. The patented method of operation is divided into three main sections:
1. DIRO® is installed between your existing water feed and your washing machine and works with both new and old machinery. The sleek, Scandinavian designed unit processes the water through several filters so that it emerges ultra-clean and deionized. This filtered water is then pumped into your washing machine in the normal way. Detergent Free.
2. When the water comes in contact with the fabrics in the washing machine it breaks the ionic bond between the fibres of the fabric and dirt. These unwanted particles are then carried away with the rinse water leaving the fabric clean and chemical free. Since the filtered water is ultra-pure and contains no lime scale or other minerals, the fabrics are left soft without the need for fabric softener. Fabrics are fragrance free and carry a pleasant, natural odour.
3. Since the filtered water is free from salt and minerals, the spin-cycle becomes more effective. Less water molecules bind to the fabric which results in a shorter drying time. This saves energy consumption from your tumble dryers by up to 40% and also saves on wear and tear on the tumble dryers themselves.
At present, all DIRO® systems are manufactured in Scandinavia, and when we order them we are having to take the distance into account for lead times, customisation and availability to customers.
We have an agreement in place to manufacture the DIRO® systems in the UK, what remains now is to boost our manufacturing capacity through projects like gofundme. Manufacturing in the UK will improve customisation capabilities and response time for customers allowing us to expand the business more easily.

Washing with detergents leaves residue within the washing machines (see picture below left side).
Washing with DIRO® and without detergents, means that all this residue is now history (see picture above right side).
Washing with mains water leaves lime-scale build-up on your machines heating elements, this is reducing the energy efficiency of your machine. (See picture below, left element).
Washing with DIRO® means that no lime-scale or dirt build up will occur within your washing machine. (See picture below, right element). Both of these elements have been in use for 2.5 years (left: normal washing, right: DIRO® washing) .
Washing with DIRO® does not leave lime-scale allowing machines to run better and reduce maintenance.
