A Home of Their Own

Donation protected

A little over a year ago, a widow and her five children came to Tytoo Gardens. Tirzah tells of their arrival on her blog @ Tirzah Joy. Viergela and her children became a part of the Starfish program  at Tytoo that works to keep children with their parents by providing basic necessities, assistance in finding housing, medical care if needed, and help in finding permanent employment so, in time, the parent(s) will be able to provide for their family.

Many who served at Tytoo Gardens a year ago got to know Nadia and Nadege, Viergela's youngest two children. They were desperately ill and needed extra food and attention from the medical staff at Tytoo. They quickly became favorites with their sweet smiles, soulful eyes, and playful attitudes.

I was one of those people. I fell in love with the sassy Nadege, the unbelievably tiny, Nadia and their sweet mother, Viergela. I knew she would be the first woman we hired at The Denim Project

By December they were able to move home to be with their family and the joy overflowed from each one as they were all together again. So much love and happiness can be found in any situation by simply being together.

I traveled down in January of 2014 with a team to start up the The Denim Project.  We traveled down with treadle sewing machines and a desire to provide jobs for a few of the women in the Starfish Program.

The very first morning our team was there, Viergela and her family were brought back to Tytoo with just the clothes on their backs. In the night, their tent had burned to the ground. Viergela and the children were safe, but they had lost nearly everything. They had suffered so much loss and struggled through so many hardships in such a short period of time.

Thankfully, plans were already underway for them to move into the Denim House. To live, to work, and to  act as security for the fledgling Denim Project.

The year has gone well and The Denim Project has grown so much that we will be moving locations. Viergela has a little time left in the Denim House and then will need to relocate.

We have talked through various options with Viergela for herfamily, and have agreed that the best option to provide safety, security, and stability for her family is to build a house.

The money is available to buy land, and for $3000, we can build Viergela a house that will protect her children from the elements, provide security in the knowledge they have a sturdy place to live, and promote stability found through in home ownership.
