A mothers worst nightmare.

Imagine your child going through years of sleepless nights, unable to sleep like a normal child, awake all night when everyone else sleeps. Alone and scared, not knowing why.

Imagine not being able to go to school because you can't stay awake during the day, no matter how much you try. Not having friends to play with, because you're "weird"

The little boy in the above picture is Danyl. He's 12, a type 1 diabetic and has a sleep disorder. For years we tried to get the doctors to listen to us about it to no avail. It was always "He'll outgrow it" or "it's a phase" I was even told, at one time, that it was MY fault because I wouldn't make him go to bed. I did but it didn't matter because he just COULDN'T sleep.

FINALLY, in January of this year, we got a doctor to listen. Dan was put on a wait list to get into the sleep clinic at Children's hospital in Denver. In March he was diagnosed with moderate sleep apnea. Last Thursday 6/18, we went to a pulmonologist/sleep doctor who told us he needs a C-Pap. She also said that we needed to get a full spectrum Light Box to help with the insomnia. We also need to get him artificial melatonin in doses not available from the pharmacy. He doesn't produce enough melatonin to be able to sleep. The only reason he sleeps now is because his body CAN'T stay awake any more and shuts down. The light box is supposed to reset his brain to sleep at night and the melatonin would help his body, naturally, regulate his sleep. Getting more sleep would help us to also control his type 1 diabetes which would save his legs, eye sight and reduce future heart disease.

You can help us immensly with the necessary things my little boy needs to get better. We aren't asking for the world, just what we need for him to get well.  The light box that he would need costs between 65 and 200 dollars while the melatonin is about 50. The rest would go toward the medical copays and bus fare to get to his tests and therapies. He will need the light box and cpap for the rest of his life, according to the doctors.

Danyl has been a real trooper but the tears in his eyes with each new diagnosis has been heartbreaking for me to see. He's been through so much in his young life and anything you can do to help make things easier for us would be greatly appreciated. With my husband and I being on disability, it's hard to put food on the table and the cost of these things, for us, is impossible. Insurance doesn't cover most of this treatment. Please, find it in your heart to help him live as normal a life as possible.
