Hello! Marhaba!

Thank you for taking the time to read on! I am a Syrian Kanun (plucked zither) player, composer, educator and researcher, currently both teaching (Kanun and directing Soas Middle Eastern Ensemble) and finishing my masters at SOAS University of London.

Why I want to do this?

Like any other Syrian, I was hit hard by the gravity of death and loss in my beautiful homeland. I was faced by a nagging question: What is my role in this and how can I make a sustainable difference which to me fulfills deeper than performing in fundraising events to gather aid for war victims. As a performing musician, I was blessed with many opportunities to spread awareness of the richness and beauty of Syrian music. The last one was being honored in performing at the legendary BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. You can listen to the performance here http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b04cfjwf. But I felt there was more to do!

December last year, I started working with an amazing theatre production company called Oily Cart which dedicates its work to children with autism and mental challenges. The show is called the Bounce where children who use wheelchairs experience the freedom of movement on trampolines. (Below is a link to their work and an article in the guardian about the show). One of the care takers brought in a 12 years old girl who reportedly was a “severe case” and therefore the cast was not supposed to expect much interaction if any thing at all. However, to our great shock and joy, the girl completely unfolded and started giggling. Magic! http://www.oilycart.org.uk/complex_disabilities/current/

At that point, I had an epiphany. What if I can bring the same joyful experience to Syrian Refugee Children?
I put an application to my university and now I hold an unconditional offer to pursue a PhD at SOAS starting from September 2014 under the title: A practical Intervention: An Improved Musical Approach to Working with Syrian Children at the Refugee Camps.

Wonderful, then what?

Here comes YOUR support to gather my part time tuition fee mounting 6715 GBP before 15th September 2014.

Thank you rewards!

In return to your wonderful support you can choose music, one to one tuition with me on kanun or arabic music theory , tickets to see me perform, booking me for your events, talks, or workshops or all above!

a small note on reward classes.

If you want to learn with me I don't require any prior musical knowledge.I work with all levels!
You can pick and choose between learning kanun, theory of arabic music using whatever instrument you play (including your voice).
Recently, I also taught a course on the cultural side of Middle Eastern music with topics including gendre, music between theory and practice, the evolution of arabic classical music from the 1850s till nowadays among many other interesting topics.

Will it go further?!

I am very passionate about this project and I believe in using my gifts as a performer educator and researcher, I can create a positive impact in the lives of these children and a document of value for future generations. To hear me talk briefly about this project and the path which led me to it, I invite you to listen to a recent interview I did for BBC Radio3 http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p023fdc6

If you will support me to dedicate 4 years of my life to this project, I promise setting up a charity dedicated to bring music and performing arts to war torn Syrian children.

Thank you so much again for reading on !
