“A Carousel for Coos County”
Any visitor to the Coquille Carousel workshop can readily see why we are in love with the artistry of Ken Means. His craft, talent, and artistry has inspired the local community to undertake his dream of building a carousel for Coos County! As the master carver for this project he is leading the effort with unparalleled skills, exceptional creativity and a passion for beauty. But he’s more than a carver, he’s also a master mentor who takes time with his students of all ages and skill levels to learn the art of carving. From his initial dream to build a carousel, we are humbled by the exceptional patience and perseverance that Ken has demonstrated over the years to bring us to where we are today with the Coquille Carousel Association. People come from all over the world to take carving classes from Ken and to seek his guidance in the art of carousel building. After just a short tour of the workshop it is not hard to see why so many people have come together to volunteer their time, talents and money to build this project. Ken’s vision is exhilarating and contagious and is the motivation for the increasing numbers of volunteers to get involved with everything from carving to painting and organizing events to fundraising.
This project celebrates the history of the timber industry and the Victorian era of the "gay 1890's", when this community was established. The carousel will be a focal point of community collaboration, artistic expression, pleasure and pride.
This classic wood-carved menagerie will
have thirteen sweeps, 37 animals and two
chariots mounted in three concentric rings
with some fixed-standing and “jumpers”
moving up and down. Its location will be
featured prominently along Highway 42 on
South Mill Avenue overlooking the Coquille
River and Dutch John Pond. The Carousel
will be close to downtown on the Coquille
Riverwalk enclosed in an elegant building
with a gift shop, workshop and
multipurpose event room, a focal
point of recreation and leisure
activities.
