Make Their College Dreams a Reality!

Our children's dreams are dying...

Far too few students from disadvantaged populations are accessing college, and those who do are ill-prepared for the academic rigor they encounter at four-year colleges and universities. The enrollment rates are low, and the dropout rates are astronomical. Without college, their chances of establishing a career that will provide them with the financial stability they need decreases significantly.

I am happy to say that this is not the end of the story...

Five years ago, I was led to step out on faith and start a nonprofit organization designed to address this issue and help students from historically underserved populations successfully prepare for, access, and complete a postsecondary program (college). This year, that organization,College and Career Pathways, began its fourth year serving students in the DC Metropolitan area.

With the support of individual contributors like you, along with our valued corporate and community partners, College and Career Pathways (CCP) has made great strides in changing the life paths of over 500 students through both our High School Program Site, CCP Stars Alumni (for our high school graduates), and Community Outreach Initiatives. With your help, 99% of our students have graduated from high school on time for the past four years, and 92% of those students have gone on to enroll in college the fall after their high school graduation. We are now working to make sure that they successfully complete their college education.

Past contributors have also helped to ensure that we have had the resources to take students on numerous college campus tours and amazing career-related field trips to NASA, the FBI, the WUSA-TV station, and Clark Construction's site of the future Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture. These trips have helped to inspire our students and show them that the goals of attending college and establishing a successful career are not beyond their reach!

He didn't think he had a chance...

When his older brother brought him into my office as a freshman, Nicholas did not believe that college was an option. His plan was to enlist to the military, "and probably get killed." After signing up for CCP, Nicholas participated on several college tours and our trips to Clark and NASA. He began to understand that college was an attainable goal, and decided that he wanted to become an engineer! By the next semester, his attitude had changed, and his grades began to improve. He is now one of our most active students and is working hard to make college a reality!

The challenge we face...

We are so proud of our students and the progress they have made! Despite these successes, however, CCP has struggled to continue our work in this challenging economic climate. Because I believe so completely in the work we are doing, in 2010, I stopped taking a salary, while continuing my role as Executive Director and adviser to the 500+ students that we have served. It has been extremely challenging, but seeing the difference that we make in our students lives has made it all worth it.

How YOU can make a difference...
This fall, College and Career Pathways launched its 5th Annual Fundraising Campaign, and we need YOUR help to continue providing essential college access and career exploration services to our students. Our goal is to raise $25,000 through this campaign to help fund program operations for the 2014 calendar year. Any donation that you make will go towards providing much-needed program materials, supplies, staffing, field trips, tutoring services, and scholarships for our students.

WE CANNOT DO THIS WORK WITHOUT YOU! Please make your contribution today! Every single dollar makes a difference!

What Our Students Have to Say about CCP

"College and Career Pathways was the hand I needed to go through this hard and important step of my life: This program is a life changing program. I came in knowing what my goals [were], but had no idea how to reach them, and now I can say I am in the process of accomplishing them." ~JR (Class of 2012)

"College Career Pathways has certainly helped me during the college/career application process. It has helped me become more organized and meet deadlines. This is a stressful procedure, and I am so lucky and grateful that I had a mentor that could calm me down and work with me to accomplish everything. This program has certainly given me confidence in myself and has introduced me to new things that I really appreciate. I do not know where I would be without this great program!" ~BL (Class of 2012)
