KERA Features My Students and our Program
Hello all you generous people out there! My name is Adam Bazaldua and I am a Culinary Arts Instructor for a public school in Dallas Texas. I have the privilege of sharing my passion for food with an amazing community of kids, but unfortunately not all the best means to do so. We are beyond blessed with the facility that we have at our campus, but we really need to furnish this beautiful kitchen with adequate small wares and tools to take our program to the next level. My hard working students devote a lot of time to learn in the kitchen and I hate that I have subpar equipment at this time. The picture attached to this page is my competition team with its fist 1st place win, at the Students Taste of Dallas this past school year.
A little about myself, I am a classically trained chef who has experience working for a few of the best chefs in this country such as Thomas Keller, Stephan Pyles and Kent Rathbun. These experiences have given me much to teach these kids about what to expect in taking on a career in the food industry. With the food industry booming, there is a huge demand for talented and passionate food professionals. It is now my job to give them the tools to make those dreams and aspirations a reality. I often think about how much I wish this program was available when I was in High School! I have the capability of making this kitchen act as a fully functioning restaurant a couple days a week, but just need to get this kitchen where it needs to be to make this happen. I’m talking about everything from uniform pots and pans vs mix match garage sale kitchen item to actually having hotel pans and professional sized sheet trays instead of disposable aluminum party dishes and more garage sale mix match cookie sheets.
This is a huge wish of mine and is definitely a gift that will continue to give and give to my students in the future. These students do their part to make my program as successful as it is, so it is my responsibility to elevate the standards and really focus on making this program what it should be. This is more than an old Home-Economics course, this is a program designed to open the eyes of our youth to the possibilities in one of the highest grossing industries in the world! This is a not only a skill to with you can have a career with but also a skill that is useful in life no matter what their career. I want my kids to get the same opportunity as neighboring suburban school districts. Please help me provide an even better program for my amazing students.
