Sierra Leone 2017 Mudslide Recovery

A mudslide on 14th August in Freetown, Sierra Leone (West Africa) killed over 1000 people. Unfortunately this devastating event has been under-represented on the world stage, limiting the amount of aid targeted towards the region. CheckoutAfrica is a Uk-based media platform aiming to change Africa's narrative. As children of Africa, we are emotionally connected to the happenings of the continent and aim to aid the progression of its people. We have done our best to publicise this tragedy, however we understand that publicity alone cannot change the lives of those affected by this terrible event. So we are taking a step further and raising £10,000 in aid for families affected by the mudslide.
Although there is an initial burst by governments and the general public to aid people affected by natural disasters, those people are soon forgotten. Their suffering however does not end and their lives are never the same again. Recovery is always a slow and long process, especially when you have nothing and nobody to help you. We would therefore like to target these funds towards long-term recovery for the victims of this mudslide.
To ensure that the money raised is used as efficiently as possible, we have teamed up with the organization Street Child who are equally passionate about this unfortunate event. They have a longstanding relationship with the people of Freetown. Together, we will be focusing on the education of children affected by this tragedy. We will aim to help the rebuilding of schools in the region and supporting the families who are unable to afford school fees due to the negative financial impact of the mudslide.
We are also planning a project to provide updates on the use of donated funds. This will include a series of visits to Sierra Leone, to report on the situation and relief effort. We will work with the local agencies involved in the relief efforts to understand the strategies implemented for recovery projects and most importantly, we will be in touch with the families who are receiving this aid.
