My Beloved Community!
I learned a couple months ago that my lifelong dream to become a doctor is on its way to being realized. I have been recently accepted into a medical school in New York, and will begin in a MS/MD program in August. I’m incredibly thankful for this opportunity to pursue a field that has meant so much to me for so long. Being able to one day care for and save lives is what has kept me steadily focused amidst the life challenges and milestones I have faced along the way. It has been what continually pushes me to grow to new heights.
In preparing for this next chapter, I am asking for your donations and support. Your help will financially assist me in obtaining some much needed school items. I’m hoping to raise $2500 to assist with academic supplies (and moving fees) such as my books, supplies, a laptop, study lamp and a desk, essentials that at this time, will help me defray the costs of these expenses.
I have come to understand what it means to have faith as well -- believing deeply in your dreams even when the light at the end of the tunnel is not yet a spark; when the seed seems too small to amount to anything, or the path is not paved just yet with what you envision. Faith in what you can achieve shaped by persistence, tenacity and motivation have given me hope in this journey. Throughout my experiences, I have seen how much these tenets have been incredible in my life, in keeping me on track, inspired and focused.
I also would like to let you know that I just returned from an educational trip in Somaliland, East Africa, where I volunteered in a maternity hospital. I witnessed first hand many patients battling for their lives in cases that were largely preventable but due to factors that pose real problems i.e. poor diet, water, lack of early prenatal care, and long distances from hospital-home. Our priorities must begin to reflect our commitment to health, wellbeing and concern for all people. In order for this to happen, the healthcare landscape has to change, I aim to be one of the health change-makers that we desperately need in this world.
