I am a single mum to a gorgeous 4 year old boy. I have been diagnosed with malignant nodular melanoma stage 3 skin cancer. It is the most aggressive kind of skin cancer and very unforgiving. The frightening thing about this melanoma is that because they grow so fast, they can go deeply very quickly (within a few months), which is why they are so dangerous.
This is a life threatening situation and I am terrified, they are concerned as it has already spread to my lymph nodes systems and possibly further.
I am South African but I'm living in Australia. I do not have permanent residence status here and therefore I am not entitled to free or subsidised medical care.
I have already had my first surgery, a radical inscission, on my lower right leg to remove a large section of tissue related to the melanoma and its vast spreading roots. The surgeon has then also performed a sentinel lymph node biopsy (removal of 2 lymph nodes in my groin)to check for further spreading.
Unfortunately it had spread to this lymphatic system!
I have had a further second radical surgery to remove this entire lymphatic system near my groin.
I have also had a 3rd radical surgery to remove the entire lymphatic system in my abdomen.
The costs for this and other further surgeries, treatments and procedures are just astronomical and run into the tens of thousands of dollars which I just do not have.
This has been quite a devastating experience and things have become extremely tough for myself and my son. I have been unable to work and subsequently we now do not have a place to live or money to buy food.
It is difficult enough facing the fact that I have cancer and do not know if I will be around to watch my son grow up, which just eats away at me every day. But now also to have to worry about financial security, accommodation, food, not being able to afford my treatments etc is just unbearable and I feel like I'm drowning.
I would be so grateful for anything anybody can offer to help us get through this.
