Black Women for Wellness Sweet 16

Tax deductible

Our Super Sweet Sixteen

Black Women for Wellness is turning Sweet 16!

We are asking you to join the celebration and help us commemorate our Super 16 in style. We have had an amazing 16 years of service to Black Women and girls both locally in south Los Angeles and statewide.

So what have we been up to you ask? Great question! Here are 10 reasons to celebrate:

10) We organized black hair stylists and nail technicians who traveled from Los Angeles to D.C. to help pass legislation to get harmful chemicals that cause reproductive and neurological development disorders out of our beauty products.

9) We conducted research looking at black hair care products and the impact on our health. We are currently expanding this research project to survey a wider net within the local Crenshaw community.

8) We passed a landmark BPA bill that got removed BPA from baby bottles and sippy cups in California. We also passed/sponsored legislation that increased reproductive health access to millions of California women, including birth control and HIV testing.

7) We served over 30,000 women through our Sisters in Motions program. Services include healthy food demonstrations with world renowned chefs (including Jamie Oliver), free lifestyle coaching to guide community members on dieting and physical activity to improve overall health of families and to prevent type 2 diabetes and low cost/free physical movement classes including belly dancing, Pilates and salsa.

6) We produce several proposition and voter guides that took into account the impact of the proposition on black women and girls lives and gave full analysis of propositions. We registered, phone banked, tabled and canvas to turn black women out to vote in several impactful races.

5) We have trained over 100 peer advocates to help educate young women and girls and empower them to make smarter choices about sex and about their health.

4) We created Sisters with Options in 2013 and have already outreached and educated over 300 community members about the Affordable Care Act and Covered California.

3) In 2013, BWW educated over 50 men and women about colon cancer screening and empowered them with the information to take control and possibly save their lives.

2) BWW started as a group of 6 women who, concerned with the health and well-being of black babies, teamed up with the Birthing Project as "sisterfriends" in 1994. The women's work led to the implementation of a BWW program that trained mentors and matched them with women from pregnancy to parenting of young children.

1) We are the only black women health organization holding down reproductive policy in California.

* Extra Credit - Black Women for Wellness sponsored the only bill that pass to expand access to women in the nation. In 2013, over 470 laws to restrict abortion rights were introduce, 68 enacted and only ONE, AB 154, that expanded reproductive health access. Now that's an extra credit point if we ever had one.

We're proud of our accomplishments but, more importantly, we are focused on the future. However, in order for us to keep doing good work on behalf of Black Women and girls, we need you! We are asking you to donate at least $16 dollars for 16 years of service, advocacy, leadership development, education, research, organizing and fighting for and on the behalf of Black women and girls.

Think of it as taking us out for lunch for our birthday!

Sincerely,
Black Women for Wellness
