Lisa LaFaver - Living with ALS

Lisa LaFaver was diagnosed with A.L.S. in 2011. A.L.S., also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, is a progressive nuerodegenerative disease that affects the nerve cells of the brain, causing progressive paralysis over the entire body while the mind is not affected. This essentially leaves a fully cognizant person trapped in the shell of a limp body.
If you don't already know her, Lisa is a 44 year old wife and mother of two girls. How is a mom with a disability able to balance a normal family life and the reality of her diagnosis? Lisa would tell you it is possible because of the strong ongoing love and support from her friends and family.
Lisa's husband had to quit his career to be her and their two daughter's primary caretaker. Lisa was previously a state employee, and thus unfortunately does not qualify for any Social Security assistance. They need monthly financially assistance to pay rent, insurance, and all other living expenses. Lisa has Medicare, but it only helps pay for certain medical equipment, and at this time, a typical lift offered by Medicare doesn't work in many situations. These lifts are too large to work in their rented home. As Lisa is essentially paralyzed partially in the upper torso, and completely from the waste down, she is also enthusiastic about getting a lift that can help her lift her feet or raise to a standing position to ease pressure on her lower back, bottom and thighs.
Her immediate need is to purchase an electric lift to assist her caregivers with lifting and transferring her, especially in her small bathroom. This is very important to her and her family. Lisa has been dropped on several occasions recently by caregivers who are not trained or physically able to lift her. In addition, those who can lift her need relief and assistance with lifting daily, as to avoid injury. Having a lift will greatly improve her quality of life and peace of mind.
