WHY HELP 'REACH OUT COMMUNITY CENTER'?
The peak hours for juvenile crime and experimentation with drugs, alcohol, cigarettes and sex are on school days between the hours of 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. (1)
Students who do not participate in after school activities are 37% more likely to become teen parents, and 49% more likely to have used drugs. If youth stay involved in after school activities through adolescence, they are more likely to attend college, vote and volunteer as adults. (2)
WE ARE HERE TO MAKE A CHANGE.
Reach Out Community Center , (ROCC) a not for profit, is opening a community center in the South Lawndale neighborhood on the west side of Chicago.
Reach Out intends to offer free programming to low-income youth from ages 7 to 17 of all ethnic backgrounds. The center plans to provide a variety of life skills and educational courses that these individuals would otherwise not have the opportunity to experience.
The programs will include but are not limited to music, theatre, dance, art, crafts, history, woodwork, writing/journalism, computer training, photography, cooking, gardening, and martial arts.
HOW YOU CAN HELP (PART ONE):
BUILD IT UP!
The building has been purchased and plans are underway to renovate the 17,000-square-feet gutted building. The renovations are estimated at approximately $1,900,000.00, and Reach Out plans to acquire a building permit to begin work late Summer 2015.
Through public donations we are attempting to raise $25,000 towards the construction of the future home of Reach Out Community Center.

With the help of donors in the last several years, we have acquired special use zoning; proper property pin number and division; demolished the interior of the building; tuck-pointed the front and the south side of the building; and purchased three plots of land next to the center for a playground and parking, as well as securing the roof of the center.
Upon request, we are happy to provide a short, safe tour of the building as it currently stands and you can track the progress of this project firsthand. A brief description of this historic building is available on our website. Let's be the start of something great!
HOW YOU CAN HELP (PART TWO):
AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS
In addition to starting the renovations of building, we have implemented Summer Programs that encompass in part some of the programs we hope to offer in the future, as well as starting to serve the community. Additionally, this Fall we will host an After School Enrichment Program for children within the South Lawndale community.
To support this great initiative, we request your help in funding Reach Out Community Center's After School Enrichment Program. This undertaking alone is estimated to cost upwards of $5,000 to cover the cost of supplies, snacks, staff salaries, field trips, transportation and more. Every little bit counts. $5 can feed a child for two class days, $10 can provide admission to an educational event, $25 covers a child's supplies, and $50 provides a week's worth of activities.
During this program, the kids will discover:
-recycling
-planting/horticulture
-martial arts
-health and nutrition
-tennis
-creative writing
-soccer
-yoga
-math & science
-and more!
