Stephen Gurman's Recovery Fund

Donation protected
Only eight weeks ago on June 27th (2015), our dear friend Stephen Gurman got out of bed to turn off a downstairs light. Only a few seconds later, his life and the lives of his loving wife Ellen and his three children – Joanna, Brett and Matthew--would change forever. With an earth-shattering crash, Stephen fell head first down the staircase to the foyer below. It was not until 72 hours later that his family and friends were reassured that he would survive.

Stephen spent the next four days in a comatose state in the ICU at Norwalk Hospital. He had suffered a traumatic brain injury and several skull fractures. After 20 agonizing days in the ICU, including two major setbacks due to infection, he finally made it to the Burke Rehabilitation Hospital where he has made great strides in his recovery. While Stephen is now able to carry on a conversation and walk gingerly, his short-term memory, impulse control and speech have a long way to go. He is fighting a personal battle every day as he tries to make it through all his various therapies while his body simultaneously expends enormous energy in an attempt to heal his brain.

Although Stephen’s doctors told Ellen that recovery from a traumatic brain injury will mean lots of work for Stephen, this tenderhearted and hilarious personality is on the road to a slow but very hopeful improvement. Insurance is an ongoing battle and will only cover a portion of the recovery effort. It is essential that Stephen receive the level of medical support that his rehabilitation team deems necessary. With three kids away at college, Ellen is left to plan how to accommodate for Stephen and her family’s future while at the same time comforting him through long days spent battling through his therapy process.

Please help us support Stephen, Ellen and their children by contributing to the Stephen Gurman Recovery Fund. The fund will cover rehabilitation expenses not covered by insurances, outfitting the family home to accommodate Stephen’s disabilities and other medical and personal necessities needed during this long and arduous process.
