Hair Length Discrimination In UK Schools: Where Boys Fall Short Of Girls

Much has been said and written about the importance of following a strict dress code in UK public schools. The practice, aimed to act as a deterrent against bullying and harassment, has contributed to staving off these phenomena, up to a certain extent, in schools around the nation.
However, no clear regulations have been laid out about the expected hair lengths pupils must have. Particularly in the case of boys, pupils sporting long hair, or a different hairstyle than the run-of-the-mill crew cut, have been a target of discrimination.
Often subjected to the cruel whims of power-abusing headmasters, young lads are being singled out among their peers due to something as innocuous as their hairstyle – and even receive some form of severe punishment, which would otherwise be reserved for delinquent pupils.
Furthermore, there have been documented instances, wherein pupils where outright instructed to chop off their luscious locks, in order to comply with the archaic school rules governing boys’ appearance.
It is time that change be brought in how young boys are treated over their girl schoolmates, in terms of the ability to wear their hair the way they choose to.
In this day and age, this pressing subject is far more than a daily disturbance in these pupils’ lives – it is a veritable human rights issue.

Boys must have the freedom to choose what to do with their hair, and enjoy the same hairstyle privileges that their girl peers do.
For this reason, a crowdfunding campaign has been set up, in order to highlight the importance of the issue in the UK society and schools.
We're creating a book to combat bullying and bring awareness to the human rights issue.

All the funds collected through the campaign will be used towards authoring book on the matter and posting billboards in select areas, to raise awareness about this unfair phenomenon.
Like-minded individuals are kindly asked to donate to the cause and stand up for change in the way the UK’s young boys are treated during their formative years.

Hello, we are Kayla Devonport  and Andrey Sidorchuk.

We have staged a  protest outside of the Department for Education in London and the Houses of Parliament, to protest against what we say is a breach of schoolchildren’s human rights in the UK.

Apart from numerous other things that are wrong with school uniform rules in United Kingdom, we have singled out hair length and style issues as being of particular concern. School children in the UK are often prohibited from having long hair or individual hair styles. Boys are at the most effected by the current rules, as they are being denied their right to have long hair in contrast to young girls who are allowed to grow their long hair.

We support many families who believe that these unjust rules must be reformed.

Maybe you have a child who wishes to keep their hair long, or express their individuality with some particular hairstyle, and you think that it is unfair for them to be denied them this human right. Or maybe it is that you feel it necessary to stand up to the many injustices in the world, including this one. If so, then join us and let our voices be heard.
Our dream is to publish a book consisting of photographs that feature boys with long hair and to hear their families` stories of being brave in the society where such boys are often bullied, both in school and outside of it .

It is our intention to publish a book entitled “Boys and Curls”, which will allow parents, and their children, to be heard in their plea to the world against such bans and bullying.

You are welcome to contact me regarding the possibility of being featured in the book if you think your circumstances are suitable.

We also intend to spend any money raised on printing and handing out leaflets near schools, and featuring our appeal on billboards, so that more people can understand the scope of the current problem.

We believe in freedom and equality and this is something you too believe in, please support our campaign.

Why staging it near Parliament and Department for Education, whereas people normally protest to their schools?

The core of the problem is that schools are given too much power to decide over the issue and basically headmasters rule supreme, making parents and their schoolchildren being subject to their whimsy policies.

The House of Parliament has given legislatively all power to the schools on the matter, leaving Department for Education powerless in this respect, so we staged the protest  near those two government bodies.

A  letter to me from Department for Education confirming the status quo is presented.

We are grateful for your participation and help,
your support will mean a lot to the struggle for people`s truly equal rights to express themselves and enjoy their schooltime being unhindered in their appearance choices. Schooltime is the thing to remember with good memories and not having been oppressed.
Please support us.
