Blankets to the Streets: Help Homeless

Donation protected
Baby, it's cold outside. Maybe we can't get all of the homeless adults and children off of the streets or pay the heating bills of everyone in need, but we CAN give them high tech blankets that increase their comfort or even chance of survival, by reflecting body heat back to them, for less than $1 each.

We're experiencing record low temps, during rough economic times. Homeless shelters are hitting max capacity. People are being turned away in sub-freezing temps. Elderly are stuck at home with inadequate heating.

The day after m 37th birthday, I woke up cold. My house doesn't have heat and the temps were 10 degrees Fahrenheit, but I am lucky enough to have space heaters. I found myself posting on Facebook that I wish I could invite the homeless in. But I have don't have the means. Still, I recalled seeing people handing blankets out to the homeless. And, I recall seeing the same blankets water soaked, later that day. A little research showed me that there are emergency blankets made of Mylar. They're water proof, wind proof, resist rips, reusable, fold up to the size of a small map, and reflect body heat back to you. They can even be worn under coats.
Seriously? Yes, seriously. $1 can still help alter a life in the US. Who knew??

Sharing the thought on Facebook, led to friends ordering and sending cases of blankets to me. A case of 50 for about $27.

Now, I don't have $27. Like many, I'm struggling, too. But I have feet, I have hands and I have the will, as well as the assistance od people in the right places. By the end of this week, the blankets we've ordered, will be passed out to the homeless along my metro route, as well as cases given to Meals on Wheels (for their clients most in need) and several local shelters, which will give them to those they cannot accommodate. We will also be going into the DC area and passing them out wherever we find the need.

I don't want to stop at the 200 blankets I'm working with. That's where I need your help. Please consider donating what you can. Together we can get blankets out not just in the Virginia and DC area, but other places, as well.

Please share this link. Please help me get the blankets to the streets. A warm heart is only as good as the actions of our hands. Let's start 2014 by sharing the warmth.

Thank YOU for making this happen.
