Equipment for Future Doc

Well, it happened. The small-town kid from rural Pennsylvania made it to Harvard Med. People with my type of low-income rural background don't often find themselves in places like this, and sure, I'm darn proud of it.

But I'd be crazy if I thought I got here on my own -- this is not just my success.

It's the success of a grandmother who let me read to her constantly when I was young. It's the success of a teacher who held me to high standards, insisting that I'd go to college, even though only 11% of folks in our zipcode did. It's the success of the family friend who helped fund the medical trip to Bolivia where I decided that I really did want to become a doctor. It's the success of the friend who cooked me dinners so I could survive applying to medical schools while pouring my whole soul into teaching.

People continue to ask if they can help out, if they can keep supporting me somehow on my journey to become an excellent physician. A friend offered to buy me my stethoscope, saying that he knew it would literally touch every patient I encounter -- and with my financial aid for next year being cut in half, any help is a huge relief. It made me consider that others might want to actively support me in a similar way.

Going into second year, we purchase the medical equipment that we'll use to develop our diagnostic skills: a blood pressure cuff, ear and eye scopes, reflex hammers, etc. It's not cheap stuff -- the recommended scopes alone run over the $500 I'm trying to raise. But with your help I can afford quality equipment that will help give me the skills to diagnose an ear infection, spot an eye tumor, or catch a woman's high blood pressure before it causes complications for her pregnancy. And these won't be just my successes either -- you'll be a part of that impact!

Thank you so, so much for considering my request and for all forms of support you have, or will, lend me throughout this journey!
