Scholar Abroad Trip: South Africa

Donation protected
I will be able to use these funds even if I do not make my goal.

I was selected to be one of the five students to participate in this scholar abroad trip. My two passion collide as our focuses will be education and entrepreneurship. This trip will be unforgetable and life changing. I am extremely excited to engage with the entrepreneurial community and students at Ubuntu Youth.

Each of us will have a special project. I am thinking about focusing on teaching: computer skills, basic programming (html, css), and a personal website page. I want to contiune the relationship with the students after I leave.

We have to pay for the international flight to South Africa. Any size of donation helps.

Itinerary

Below is an explanation of the trip:

Kwazulu-Natal and Cape Town, South Africa
"Youth Empowerment in the Fight Against Poverty: Education in Rural South Africa"

Students traveling with Scholar Development will investigate the cultural framework of South Africa's education system and how it impacts economic development; the role of social entrepreneurship in alleviating poverty at the community level; the viability of using microfinance as a tool to overcome socioeconomic inequality; and the implications of apartheid and race relations in modern-day South Africa. Work with a local NGO and tutor high school students.

Ubuntu Youth exists to engage the next generation to fight poverty and a cycle of other escalating issues in rural Verulam, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Ubuntu Youth is an after-school program that seeks to invest in promising high school students by providing a strong educational and life-skills foundation that is often overlooked in rural public schools. Instead of perpetuating the top-down handout mentality that is often prevalent in the third world, we strive to help students realize they can be part of the solution.
