Back on Our Feet

They always say when it rains it pours, don't they? And it seems to have been pouring on us lately. Our little family can't seem to catch a break over the past few months.

To begin with, my partner and I recently took in her 6-year-old son for full-time custody, after his father decided that he no longer wanted him around. While we were happy to do so, it required quickly moving into a bigger apartment with higher rent... and breaking our lease at our old place, which is still requiring us to pay out our old lease. Double rent for 4 months, lovely. And of course there are many, many expenses that come with taking in a child, especially one who almost literally comes in with only the clothes on his back. (No child support from dad, of course.)

My partner and I both work two jobs to try to support ourselves, but we are deep in debt from school loans (some of which cannot be deferred), car payments, credit card payments... all the things that just add up. Since we make "so much" on paper, government assistance is out of the question for us.

Having double rent added on was hard enough, but then things just crashed down.

I was in a car accident nearly two weeks ago. Our insurance has no rental coverage, and my deductible is $1000 (which I do not have to spare.) We still do not know if my car is a total loss or not, as the insurance company has been dragging their feet on getting it appraised. As of right now, we have been trying to get an older vehicle of ours in driveable condition so that I can get to work, but it is going to cost an unknown amount to get it into workable order. We've already spent several hundred on it with more to go. Public transit is laughable here... I can get to one job easily enough, but the second is practically impossible.

As of right now, our rent check for this month bounced ($975), we have a two-month behind electric bill due ($400), and our phones are going to be shut off if they're not paid in a few days ($200+). Since I missed work after my car accident, my paycheck next week is going to be nearly nothing.

This is not even mentioning the fact that I'm supposed to be getting cortisone shots in my heels so I'm able to stand and work for the 16+ hour days that I pull on my feet... $60 per doctor visit, there, and I have an MRI scheduled to figure out what I did to my knee that's causing constant stabbing pain...

Can life just give us a break, please?

Any amount would be helpful and greatly appreciated.
