So, I have been watching Tom work these past couple of weeks. I got to thinking that his tenacity, tireless hours, multi tasking, dedication and work ethic are characteristics he acquired during his military service. Yes, Tom is a proud retired military man!! Our loyal friends, family and patrons... this has been a very good week. We are racing down the home stretch, the carrot is dangling right there in front of our face. If we can meet this financial goal, we foresee an opening on August 25. Did anyone notice that it is a Monday? We have never been open for full service on a Monday! Just to let our readers know the real reason behind our goal of keeping the restaurant open and running:
Tom's mom Peggy, has worked here since the 1950's and then became owner with her new husband in 1965. Her entire life has been Monte Bello's. Ed is no longer associated with the business. But, in his leaving, he took everything they worked for. Because she received little in pay, her social security is very minimal. At the age of 80, without the continued income from the restaurant she will lose everything she has worked so hard to have. She is still a very vibrant on the go type of woman, who still insists on helping out in the restaurant when she can.
Taking away her lively hood would be taking away her independence. Tom could not let that happen to his mom, could you?
Since Tom and I have started managing, the business has started thriving again. Yes, we have been putting every cent back into the business, receiving no compensation for ourselves. We were quite sure the money we had saved was enough to cover all expenses. Little did we know this renovation would double in price. Even though we are asking for help, we hope that by giving gift certificates to donors, it will show we are serious about our commitment to show our customers how much we really do appreciate them. Major upgrades and repairs have to be made per the county inspectors. Monte Bello Pizzeria has been in business since 1950. I started managing the business last year for my mom and trying to re-build it back to what it used to be. With the help of employees, the forever loyal and the new customers... business has been good. Recently, we were told by inspectors that we needed: a new hood system installed, upgrade some electrical, all new wall panels, new refrigerator and freezers, and an entire new stone tile kitchen floor.
We had the floor put down and built new walls in the kitchen. While the hood system was being installed, the inspectors now looked at the plumbing. The walls had to come back off and we now have to have all of the plumbing re-done including drainage. Now the brand new tile is being torn out to put pipes under the floor. (more money). Additionally, they are requiring us to get a new dishwasher.
We were ready for the $24,000.00 for the hood system, however now adding on $9,000.00 for the plumbing, another $6,000.00 for the dishwasher and the additional plumbing has brought us past the breaking point. All together we are at about $50,000.00 for renovations and new appliances. I am doing what labor I can (jackhammering and digging) to save some labor cost. All of our customers are wanting us to stay open, but without financial assistance that will not happen. We have worked extremely hard over the past year and turned things around with hard work, dedication and sincere caring about our patrons, customers, friends and family enjoying a great meal!
I don't want to lose the family business that has built 64 years worth of memories for many.
I DO NOT want to disappoint our loyal and happy customers!
