If a kid with a dream of potato salad can raise thousands of dollars, maybe a guy with a dream of becoming an English teacher can get a few bucks thrown his way.
Ian is 42. He's been on the Dean's List every semester. He's in the honors program, is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, and an ambassador for the school (which basically means he takes tour groups around campus and talks up the school). He also volunteers at an animal shelter.
My point is, he's no slacker. He's serious about this and he's committed to becoming a teacher at the high school level. He wants to work in Baltimore City, where it's often overcrowded, under-funded, and occasionally dangerous, because that's where kids need the most encouragement.
He's only got two years before he gets his Bachelor's Degree. But the rising cost of tuition and the rising cost of living are making it hard for us to pay for college.
We're trying to figure out the financial aid process, but there's a hitch -- he's an immigrant from Canada. He's legal, but the visa that states he was 30 when he moved to the US is in his original passport, which is IN Canada. They kept the passport when he renewed it. Because of this, we can't get the waiver he needs that says he was too old to register for Selective Service when he entered the US. If we'd known then that he'd be going to college we would've gotten the waiver right away, not 12 years down the line. We're waiting for a copy of his paperwork to be sent to us (thank you, Freedom of Information act) but the wheels of government turn slowly.
