Om Disabled Child Care Home

Donation protected

I came to Nepal in June to do some volunteer work with Nepal Orphans Home/ Volunteer Nepal, intending to work with an anti-trafficking NGO. I somehow ended up at a new "placement" in need of help: Om Disabled Childcare Home located in Kathmandu Syuchatar, an NGO founded by Ratna Kala Oli and named after her eldest son, Om, who is cognitively and physically disabled. Ratna has a family of her own and cares for the 14 residents with the help of one part time, paid staff member. I spent two weeks with the kids whose mental and physical abilities vary greatly-- Santoshi, pictured above in blue, is immobile but is very bright and can read and write in English. There are others, like one of my favorite little girls Devi (in the window), who are very mobile but are cognitively impaired. Three of the girls go to school and would return in the afternoons to go for our daily walks. Ratna is a wonderful person in need of financial (and physical help). She is always looking for volunteers but I also recognized the importance of financial help with things like food, clothing and school uniforms.
A donation of $5 US is $500 Nepali rupees-- a substantial amount. I promised Ratna that I wouldn't forget about her. If we are able to raise funds for basic necessities, I would like to make this a lifelong committment and hopefully get them wheelchairs, art supplies, toys and possibly assist in hiring a full time staff member.
Thanks for reading! More photos to come.
