Team Balsa Salsas won their Regional and State Tournaments, advancing to the Destination Imagination Global Finals and will be representing USA/Ohio in Knoxville, Tennessee!
The Balsa Salsas are composed of 5 kids (Riya Hegde, Shilpa Gopal, Aanya Patel, Aditi Sanghavi, and Justin Vaden), ages 10 to 12 years old, ranging from 4th to 6th grade.
Destination Imagination is cross-curricular competition that complements K-12 education by fostering curiosity, courage and creativity. It offers seven academic Challenges and the team chose Engineering, where you design, build and test multiple free-standing structures (made as light as possible using only balsa wood & glue) that work together to support as much weight as possible. They also have to present a creative skit of a collaborative solution to a global issue of their choosing, which was animal poaching.
All of this is done independently by the team without outside help! They research everything. They design and test the structures, create the skit, and build all of the wonderful props used in the skit. In the Regional competition, their structure held over 1000 lbs without breaking. For State, they designed an even lighter structure that held 550lbs!
They will be competing against thousands of students from over 15 countries across the globe. This is a rare opportunity to meet with and compete against the best of best!
The team needs $5000 to cover registration and event passes. Every donation at any amount is sincerely appreciated.
