Get Babel to CUPSI!

BABEL is a poetry collective based out of the North Philadelphia area. Though our primary focus is spoken word, music and lyricism, we support the progression of the arts, not only on the Temple University campus, but throughout Philadelphia.
This year, BABEL is trying to attend CUPSI for the second time. CUPSI or The College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational is an internationally ranked poetry slam where universities around the world come together to share, appreciate art and compete. Our poets have worked incredibly hard to get there, but hard work can only go so far. We need help to get to University of Texas Austin, where CUPSI is being held this year. Our expenses include:
- CUPSI registration fee
- Stipend for a slam coach
- Airfare to and from the competition
-Room and board
Throughout the semester, we hold free writing workshops and open mics for poets and active minds in the Philadelphia area. In addition we host a show called Babylon, a spoken word showcase with a feature performance. BABEL would like to continue this as well as going to CUPSI but our funding was only desgined for one of these activities. We would love to share our voice at CUPSI, one which has ties to underserved and Philadelphia commuintities, and the Philadelphia arts commuinitiy at large. However we cannot do this if it risks compromising our ongoing commitiment to where we live.
In Babel's seven years of existence, we have never been a slam team. We have rarely ventured off of Temple's campus to compete, and constantly struggle to show off our art the way we'd like because of funding problems. By going to CUPSI, we are not only setting and achiving this goal for ourselves, but for Temple and the Philadelphia slam commuinity at large.
