Thai Animal Sanctuary Great Run!

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Jo! I am running a half marathon, The great North Run, on 13th September 2015, in aid of Baan Unrak Thai Animal Sanctuary. Here's why!

Thailand is a paradise for many, but for animals, especially street dogs, it can be a living nightmare. They are often cursed, beaten, mutilated, poisoned and killed, even boiled or skinned alive for meat or their skins. They are treated like vermin with no rights....

In a seemingly hopeless situation, a brave girl, Gemma Ashford, who was already volunteering with children in Thailand, was shocked and heartbroken at how badly these animals were treated, and decided to do something about it!

She set out by taking in the street dogs herself after being given a dying puppy that she nursed back to health. As other dogs came to her in need of help the sanctuary began, after the Baan Unrak school donated some land o build it on. Gemma now had to return to the UK to earn money to keep the sanctuary afloat and build accomodation and a clinic for the animals. Gemma paid for the construction of a 1 roomed structure, in which they could all live. Word spread that someone was helping dogs and people started bringing the now infamous ”Farang Ma” or “Foreign Dog Lady” an increasing number of sick and injured animals.

With only a few donations from family and friends, Gemma had to return home for a few months every year to work and raise funds for the sanctuary. With that money she was able to buy much needed medical supplies and food for all the animals.  Compulsory neutering and vaccinations against disease is routine, reducing the numbers of destitute dogs and cats. The sanctuary has continued to grow and with the help of visiting volunteer vets and international volunteers, thousands of animals have reaped the benefits of all of Gemma’s hard work and determination.

There are many challenges facing Gemma, the animals and the sanctuary, one of which is that they need re- locate and re- build very soon.

Without the help of volunteers, vets and donations that keep funding things, this may not be possible and the hope and future of these street dogs and other animals would be uncertain.

Please donate to a very deserving charity  and be inspired by one girls brave determination to make a difference!

A story about a dog called Piglet:

Piglet is the only survivor of 11. From the moment she was born, the guesthouse next door threatened Gemma, saying that they would throw the puppies into the jungle unless she took them…there was no room at the sanctuary for 11 more, so a volunteer vet and Gemma sterilised the puppies and begged the guest house to let them be- to her horror, 6 were killed with poison, a few weeks later- another 4 poisoned including Pig tail- Piglets mother and Piglet was slashed with a machetti knife. Gemma was heartbroken.

With only 2 dogs left- Piglet and Mango, Gemma hoped that this would stop but it didn’t. Mango was shot dead and Piglet, shot in the leg. We managed to catch Piglet with sleeping medicine and take her to the vet for a leg operation. She can now thankfully walk again.

Poor Piglet is a nervous wreck and doesn’t like to be touched, but runs to the sanctuary gates to greet Gemma when she returns from any length of time away (even 5 mins). She will let Gemma scratch her back every so often, but with other people she will only get close enough for a sniff when she thinks you’re not looking.

Because of how timid she is, Piglet will remain with us at the sanctuary for now. She is coming out of her shell, albeit extremely slowly. If/when she does become less shy and seems like she would benefit from a family she will will be available for adoption.

PLEASE HELP ME RAISE FUNDS TO REBUILD THE NEW SANCTUARY AND HELP KEEP IT RUNNING!
