Continuing Patrick's Education

Patrick is going back to school, but we have a bump in the road. I'll start with the problems:

He started working a summer job to pay for a course that he will have to take online if he wants it in time to graduate in spring 2015. This course is $750, as are all courses offered online at OPSU.

However, I was laid off for the summer from my college cafeteria job, which was paying all the bills - so we've had to use his paychecks instead to cover bills we couldn't seek immediate assistance for. I did not qualify for unemployment, as I have gone back to work while he's going to school - and I've only worked a few short months. I was out of work for three weeks, and now I'm traveling much farther for work (walked two blocks for previous employment, and now I have to drive 20 miles one way for the current job - leaving me with a higher fuel bill), and I am making 60 cents LESS per hour at this time.

We are thankful for the paying jobs we DO have right now, but it still leaves us in a shortfall.

During all of the troubles of this summer, we also learned that due to the number of credit hours he has, his financial aid application was suspended, pending review. The board that will meet to clear him to receive aid doesn't meet until a week after the fall 2014 semester starts. This leaves us also working to figure out how to pay the $300 needed to confirm the fall semester enrollment.

As of right now, if we can raise $550, we can come up with the other chunk of the money needed to do this. If we can get up to $1050 (the total needed for the course and confirmation), things will be less tight, but we try to set realisitic goals. The plans were set for us to pay for all of this ourselves, but difficulties arise.

When Patrick graduates in spring 2015, he will graduate with both an English and History BA. This is why he has so many credit hours. A letter from his advisor has already been written, with a grad check, to present to the financial aid board when they meet. He will not be able to start the fall 2014 semester until the summer course is paid for and the enrollment confirmation payment is made for the fall.

Any amount that you can help with is greatle welcome, as is spreading the word so we can reach our goal in time. We need to have this happen before August 1st, so we have time to get the funds where they need to go. The OPSU fall semester starts on August 13th.
