Gastroschisis is a birth defect that causes the intestines to protrude from a hole in the abdomen, typically to the right of the umbilical cord. Occasionally, other organs are involved as well. This must be repaired surgically after birth, although surgery is not always possible immediately and depends on many factors including the amount of bowel outside of the body. While approximately 90% of affected infants survive in industrialized nations with proper medical care, there is still a 10% mortality rate due to complications or related defects and infections – even with the best medical care. [In the USA, published survival rates range from 83%-97%. In nations without access to proper medical care, the mortality rate is often 100%. In the United States, Gastroschisis affects 1 out of every 2229 babies according to the CDC2, although the actual rate varies by state.

My son was born with Gastroschisis in 2008. In 2015 I decided to decorate my personal truck with decals to help raise awarness about Averys Angels Gastroschisis Foundation and Gastroschisis. The hood has names of survivors and angels of Gastroschisis.

I'm wanting to travel to different states with my truck every year for Gastroschisis awarness day, July 30th, so families can see the truck in person. I would also take to truck to different fundraising events that someone may put on for Avery's Angels Gastroschisis Foundation which is the only non profit organization for gastroschisis.
